Summary

Rampage on the Atari 7800 captures the arcade’s glorious chaos in a home‑console package, letting up to three players become a trio of hulking, animal‑like monsters tearing through high‑rise cityscapes. The core loop is simple yet addictive: climb any building, pound it to rubble, and move on until the skyline is reduced to dust.

Destruction is rewarded with a buffet of edible bonuses—fruit, roast chicken, even startled soldiers—that instantly refill health, while enemy fire, dynamite sticks, and falling debris chip away at your monster’s stamina. Smashing windows reveals a mix of helpful items, money, or hazardous surprises like bombs and flashing photographers that can send you plummeting.

The game cycles through dozens of North American locales over a 128‑day calendar, looping five times for a total of 768 days, each repeat ending with a "mega vitamin" bonus that fully heals the crew and pumps up the score. This relentless replay loop, combined with the frantic multiplayer mayhem, makes the 7800 version a timeless showcase of pure, unapologetic destruction.

Storyline

Rampage on the Atari 7800 lets players control a trio of oversized creatures—George the Ape, Lizzie the Lizard and Ralph the Wolf—who wreak havoc across the United States. Each monster is actually a human transformed by a bizarre experiment: scientist George became a King‑Kong‑style gorilla after ingesting experimental vitamins, Lizzie turned into a Godzilla‑like reptile after swimming in radioactive‑contaminated water, and Ralph mutated into a massive werewolf after eating a hot‑dog laced with an unknown additive.
The opening cutscene even shows designer Brian Colin inserting photos of himself as George, his wife Rae as Lizzie, and Jeff Nauman as Ralph, underscoring the game's tongue‑in‑cheek homage to classic monster movies. From coast to coast, the three arcade legends embark on a mission of pure, destructive fun.
