Summary
When Atari rolled out their 7800 version of Mean 18 in ’89, I was instantly drawn to its surprisingly deep feature set for a cartridge‑based game. The system kept the original’s three‑click swing mechanic—tap to start, set power with a second press, then nail draw or fade on the final click—giving just the right blend of arcade feel and timing challenge.
What really set it apart was the built‑in course editor; even on the 7800 you could craft your own holes and then tee them up on legendary layouts like Augusta National, Pebble Beach or St. Andrews. The editor let you experiment with course design without ever leaving the console.
The game’s difficulty options made it welcoming for beginners—automatic club recommendations and forgiving swing curves—while the Expert mode cranked up the draw/fade angles and left you to choose the optimal club yourself. Switching between regular and professional tees added an extra strategic layer, keeping each round fresh whether you were just getting the feel of a golf swing or battling for precision.
