Summary

Impossible Mission drops you into a sleek, time‑pressured spy thriller where every room feels fresh thanks to its random layout – a nod to the roguelike roots that Dennis Caswell admired. You have six in‑game hours to hunt down 36 puzzle pieces hidden in furniture, then piece them together in groups of four; the pieces can appear mirrored, forcing you to think in both axes. The platforming is spiced up by moveable platforms you must reset and a clever “snooze code” that freezes the electrified cylindrical robots – some even fire short‑range death rays – long enough to search. Hovering electrified balls chase you, a visual homage to the security guard rover from *The Prisoner*. The Atari 7800 port carries the original’s digitized speech, a rarity for its era, and the checkerboard‑style music puzzles echo the electronic game Simon. Critics praised its blend of action and brain‑teasing design, cementing its status as a cult classic.

Storyline

In the Atari 7800 game Impossible Mission, you play as a secret operative—Agent 4125—who is sent to stop the evil genius Professor Elvin Atombender. He is believed to be tampering with national‑security computers and holding the world hostage with a threat of nuclear annihilation from his underground laboratory.

Your mission is to infiltrate Atombender’s stronghold, dodge his human‑seeking robots and other hazards, and locate the scattered pieces of a nine‑letter password. Once reassembled and decrypted, the code grants access to the villain’s control room, and you must race against the clock to stop his plot.
