Summary
Ikari Warriors made its way onto the Atari 7800 in 1990, right at the tail end of the console’s life cycle, and it still feels like a flash of arcade magic. The game’s hallmark is the rotary joystick – a 12‑way switch that lets you spin your character independently of movement, so you can sprint in one direction while blasting enemies from another. That freedom to walk and shoot in eight directions was practically unheard of on home systems back then. Even more impressive is the two‑player co‑op, where you and a friend can coordinate attacks, swapping grenades and gunfire while the screen scrolls upward toward the ominous village of Ikari. The Atari port preserved the original’s frantic pace and power‑up hunting, proving that the 7800 could still deliver a genuine arcade experience just before the system faded out.
Storyline
Ikari Warriors on the Atari 7800 puts players in the boots of two commandos on a rescue mission. You control Colonel Ralf Jones, the red‑shirted soldier, and Second Lieutenant Clark Still, the blue‑shirted partner, as they fight toward the village of Ikari. Their objective is to free a captured high‑ranking officer – Colonel Cook in the Western releases (called General Kawasaki in the Japanese version). The duo battles waves of Neo‑Nazi forces, including tanks, infantry and helicopters, before finally extracting the officer and escaping the hostile zone. In some regional versions the heroes are renamed Paul and Vince, while the rescued officer’s name also changes accordingly.
