Summary

The Atari 7800 version of Galaga carries over the addictive fixed‑shooter core that made the arcade classic famous. You pilot a lone starfighter at the bottom of a star‑studded screen, blasting swarms that dive from the top and sides. The game’s hallmark is the tractor‑beam enemy that can steal your ship, letting you rescue it for a powerful dual‑fighter.

Large boss ships, known as Gorg, need two hits and can also capture your craft; taking them down while they hold a rescued ship merges the two into a single, wider shooter. Every fourth round switches to a calm bonus formation that never fires, offering a brief lull. The original arcade famously hit a hidden kill screen after stage 255, a quirk that players still talk about.

When Atari launched the 7800, Galaga was one of the thirteen titles that showed the system could deliver arcade‑style action at home, and critics praised its faithful recreation and the added challenge of the dual‑fighter mechanic. Even decades later, the mix of simple controls and layered strategy keeps it a benchmark for retro shooters.

Storyline

Galaga on the Atari 7800 puts you in the cockpit of the starfighter Gyaraga. From the bottom of the screen you must blast wave after wave of the alien Galaga forces, dodging their projectiles and preventing them from wiping out humanity. Each stage ramps up the challenge as the swarms grow more aggressive, keeping the battle frantic and addictive.
