Summary

The Atari 7800 port of Double Dragon lets the legendary 1987 arcade brawler live on a home console. It captures the two‑player cooperative chaos that made the original a sensation, complete with punch‑heavy combos and the chance to snatch an enemy’s weapon after a successful disarm. Cut‑scenes still bookend the action, giving the side‑scrolling levels a cinematic feel that was ahead of its time. Under the hood, the cartridge harnesses the 7800’s 8‑bit architecture to mimic the arcade’s vibrant palette, squeezing out as many colors as the hardware allows. Critics praised the transition; the game rode the wave that saw Double Dragon become America’s top‑grossing dedicated arcade title in the late ’80s, cementing its role in the golden age of beat‑'em‑ups and spawning a lasting franchise.

Storyline

In Double Dragon for the Atari 7800 you play as Billy Lee or his twin Jimmy—named Hammer and Spike in the arcade manual. They must rescue Billy’s girlfriend Marian from the Black Warriors gang. The journey spans four missions: a city slum, a factory, a forest, and the gang’s hideout. Each area is filled with enemies and obstacles.

The fourth mission moves to a separate map inside the hideout, where traps line the corridors and the brothers fight toward the main hall. There they face the leader Willy, the final boss. A solo player ends the game by defeating Willy. If both brothers survive together, the story forces them to battle each other for Marian’s affection.

This final showdown gives Double Dragon a memorable twist, turning a rescue mission into a rivalry between the Lee brothers.
