Summary
The Atari 7800 port of Dig Dug finally saw the light of day on May 15, 1986, after a two‑year limbo caused by shifting Atari management. Though announced in 1984 alongside the console’s own debut, the game was held back until the company could line up the resources to finish the conversion. When it arrived, it offered the classic arcade experience in a cartridge that fit neatly into the 7800’s sleek design.
In this version you can play solo or with a friend, digging tunnels with a shovel while an air pump lets you inflate the two iconic foes—Pooka and Fygar—until they burst. Rocks sit idle in the earth, ready to drop and squash enemies, and if you pause long enough the monsters turn into harmless ghosts that drift through the dirt. Occasionally a vegetable sprouts in the center of the screen, rewarding you with extra points for snatching it up.
The 7800 edition also inherited the arcade’s infamous round‑256 kill screen, but Atari later issued a patch that removed the overflow bug, allowing endless play for those who wanted to keep digging forever.
