Summary
Choplifter! drops you into a horizontally scrolling battlefield where you pilot a combat helicopter that can face left, right, or forward. The forward view lets you blast tanks on the ground while you can still fly in any direction, and you can fire in any of the three orientations without having to line up your flight path.
Rescuing hostages is a delicate dance: each of the four barracks holds 16 captives, and your chopper can only carry that many at once. After shooting a building to free the prisoners, you must land just right for them to board, then ferry them back to the U.S. Postal Service hub. As you fill the cabin, the enemy grows more aggressive, forcing multiple risky trips.
While grounded you’re vulnerable to tank fire, and airborne foes—jet fighters with missiles and bombs—keep the pressure on. Even an alien spacecraft appears later, demanding precise maneuvering and careful landings, because a tilted touchdown will crush any hostages trying to climb aboard.
Storyline
In Choplifter! for the Atari 7800 you take the seat of a combat helicopter pilot on a daring rescue mission. The enemy‑controlled territory belongs to the evil Bungeling Empire, and your objective is to fly into hostile barracks and extract the captives.
The hostages are described as delegates to the United Nations Conference on Peace and Child Rearing, trapped behind enemy lines. According to the backstory, the helicopter’s parts were smuggled into the country disguised as a mail‑sorting machine, adding a covert twist to the operation. Your skillful piloting and timely landings are the only way to bring the delegates safely back to freedom.
