The Atari 5200 version of Xevious arrived as an unreleased prototype that still captures the core feel of Namco’s classic vertical shooter. You pilot the Solvalou, a sleek fighter equipped with a laser blaster for airborne foes and a photon bomber that rips through ground installations. The game throws a surprising variety of enemies at you, each type demanding the correct weapon—miss a shot and the target simply sails past. Because the two fire‑modes never overlap, mastering the rhythm of alternating air and ground attacks becomes the key to survival. Even in its unfinished state, the prototype showcases the tight, dual‑weapon gameplay that made the original so addictive.
Scientific research in the world of Xevious reveals a startling truth: humanity is actually the alien species that arrived on Earth, while the hostile Xevions are the planet’s original inhabitants. The Xevions now seek to reclaim their home, launching an overwhelming assault fleet built over millennia into the biggest, nastiest, and most destructive ships Earth has ever seen. Earth’s last hope is an experimental fighter called the Solvalou, a one‑way, high‑risk mission to stop the Xevion onslaught. Success isn’t guaranteed, but the fate of the planet rests on defeating the alien fleet before they can retake Earth.
