Stargate, the unreleased Atari 5200 prototype, was meant to be the spiritual sequel to Defender, borrowing the frantic, side‑scrolling dog‑fight that made the arcade classic a hit. You pilot a lone fighter, weaving through swarms of alien ships while trying to rescue stranded humanoids before the screen fills with firepower. The game introduced a risky Hyperspace button that instantly warps you to a random sector – sometimes landing you in a safe pocket, other times dumping you into the thick of enemy fire. Adding a tactical twist, the Inviso button cloaks your ship for a short window, letting you slip past foes or set up a surprise attack. Though never officially released, the prototype hinted at a deeper, more unpredictable take on the Defender formula, promising both the familiar rush of alien‑blasting and fresh, high‑stakes maneuvering.
In Stargate for the Atari 5200, the player must survive long enough to rescue humanoids.
