Space Dungeon on the Atari 5200 turns the arcade’s frantic twin‑stick shooter into a home‑console adventure, complete with a dual‑controller holder that lets you snap two 5200 pads together for true eight‑direction movement and firing. The graphics are scaled up – objects appear about four times larger than in the arcade – and the foes are a touch less aggressive, but the core twin‑stick feel remains intact.
Each level is a six‑by‑six grid of 36 rooms, linked by doorways of varying size. You start in an entrance room and must navigate an automap toward the "Collect Bonus" chamber, snatching up treasures along the way. Dropping your loot after a collision marks the spot with an "X" on the map, giving you a chance to retrieve it before it’s lost forever. Visiting every room nets a 10,000‑point bonus and an extra ship.
The dungeon teems with quirky enemies – from spiky Pikers and corner‑firing Zappers to the indestructible Thief that pilfers your treasure. Collectible riches range from the modest Iron Cross to the dazzling Platinum Ark. Critics praised the 5200 port, awarding it 4.5/5 from AllGame and a spot on Flux’s Top 100, and it later resurfaced in the Taito Legends Power‑Up compilation for PSP.
Space Dungeon thrusts players into a futuristic lab where scientists have recovered mysterious cosmic chunks. They believe the data hidden within these fragments could prevent Earth from suffering the same fate as a long‑lost, shattered planet. The player must navigate the dungeon’s hazards to retrieve the information before it’s too late.
