Summary

RealSports Football feels like a stripped‑down arcade version of the gridiron, where the field is a clean 100‑yard stretch and each side fields just five players. The offense is limited to a quarterback, a flanker and three linemen, while the defense lines up with two linemen, two cornerbacks and a linebacker – the player always controls the ball‑carrier. Plays are chosen from a tiny menu: pass left, pass right, run or kick, and the game instantly swaps control to the receiver once the ball is released. There are no kickoffs, no penalties, no fumbles and the ball never goes out of bounds; a touchdown simply adds seven points, a field goal three, and a safety two. Defensive tactics range from full blitzes to cornerback covers, and interceptions end the play with an automatic turnover. The Novice and Expert switches tweak player speed and catching ability, while each quarter lasts 15 minutes and the scoreboard tops out at 99. Jim Huether single‑handedly designed, programmed and sound‑tracked the 5200 version, even demoing it for Steven Spielberg, and the title later earned a 1984 Arkie Award and a 2018 re‑release on the AtGames Flashback platform.
