Summary

RealSports Basketball for the Atari 5200 exists in two markedly different builds, both crafted by programmer Patrick Bass. The later build feels like a finished product, complete with hidden Easter eggs that hint at the developers’ sense of humor. Oddly, despite the effort, Atari never put either version on the market, and the reason for creating two separate iterations remains a mystery. After Patrick’s tragic death in a 1998 car crash, his brother Ben Bass teamed up with Ken Van Mersbergen to make sure the final version finally reached the public. Thanks to that effort, collectors can now experience a piece of unfinished Atari history that would otherwise have stayed locked in a vault.
