The Atari 5200 version of Pengo lets you steer with a joystick and a single action button. Press the button while moving the stick and Pengo will shove the ice block he’s facing, sending it sliding until it hits a wall or another block, crushing any Sno‑Bees in its path. Taking out multiple Sno‑Bees at once boosts the points you earn, and a stunned Sno‑Bee can be stepped on for a quick 100‑point bonus when you push a side wall and the water "vibrates." Each round features a maze of sixteen repeatable levels, and at the start of a level the ice blocks that hide egg‑laden Sno‑Bees flash in the color of that round’s bees. Smash those blocks to eliminate the eggs before the bees hatch, or wait for the bees to emerge and then trap them with sliding ice. Diamond blocks are indestructible; line three of them horizontally or vertically for a big score—10,000 points if they’re free of walls, or 5,000 points if they’re against a wall—while also stunning every Sno‑Bee nearby. If you survive 60 seconds without losing a life, the game flips into sudden‑death mode: the music speeds up and the Sno‑Bees move faster. When only one bee remains, a special jingle cues its frantic dash toward a corner where it vanishes, ending the round. The maze you start with is always the same on power‑up, but after the attract mode runs its course the layout changes, keeping the ice‑pushing puzzle fresh for each play session.
