Summary

Kaboom! is essentially a home‑console remix of Atari’s 1978 Avalanche, re‑skinned around a manic figure called the Mad Bomber who hurls explosives from the top of the screen. Using the Atari 5200’s paddle controller, you slide a pair of water buckets back and forth at the bottom, trying to catch each bomb before it hits the ground; a miss triggers a chain‑reaction explosion and costs you a bucket, which you can earn back once you rack up 1,000 points. As the Mad Bomber darts more erratically, the bombs accelerate through seven increasingly frantic levels, and a difficulty switch can narrow the buckets for an extra squeeze. Paul Wilson’s 5203 port added a "Pitch and Catch" two‑player mode that lets friends alternate between bucket‑catching and bomb‑dropping, while the expressive graphics of the Mad Bomber earned particular praise. The game’s simple, addictive loop resonated with players, driving sales past the one‑million‑cartridge mark and cementing Kaboom! as one of the era’s top Atari sellers.

Storyline

Kaboom! on the Atari 5200 pits the player against the chaotic Mad Bomber, a character who hurls bombs across the screen at random.
Armed with a set of water‑filled buckets, the player must catch each falling bomb to defuse it; any bomb that slips past explodes and costs the player one of the limited buckets.
