Summary

Defender drops you into a relentless side‑scrolling battlefield on an unnamed planet, where a single spaceship darts left and right over a razor‑thin, pixel‑wide horizon. A joystick lifts and drops the craft while five buttons handle thrust, reverse, fire, smart‑bombs and the risky hyperspace jump that teleports you to a random spot. Three lives start you off, but every 10,000 points nets an extra ship and a fresh smart bomb, keeping the pressure high as alien waves surge.

The alien roster is a chaotic mix: landers snatch humans, turning them into fast‑moving mutants if they reach the screen top; bombers drop floating explosives; swarms, pods and baiters chase or collide with you. Shooting a lander frees a captive, but you must catch the falling human before it dies. The Atari 5200 port, released in November 1982, swaps the original’s control scheme for the console’s joystick and button layout, a change that Creative Computing’s David H. Ahl praised for adding a substantial new challenge.

Storyline

Defender on the Atari 5200 drops you onto the surface of an unnamed planet under siege by alien invaders. Your mission is to keep the planet from exploding while fending off relentless waves of hostile craft.

Astronauts wander the landscape, and alien landers swoop down to snatch them. If a lander carries a human to the top of the screen, the captive mutates into a fast‑moving enemy that attacks your ship.

Failing to protect the astronauts triggers a planetary explosion, turning the entire level into a swarm of mutants. Surviving the onslaught of these mutants restores the planet and completes the level.
