Blaster, the little‑known shooter that originated on the Atari 5200 before ever hitting the arcade cabinets, still manages to surprise me with its early 3‑D feel. Vid Kidz’s work for Williams gave the game a cockpit perspective that literally drags the whole screen as you steer, a trick that felt ahead of its time. The playfield is divided into four distinct stages, each looping with a noticeable bump in difficulty once you clear them all. Even without a wide release, the graphics hold up as a bold attempt at immersive space combat, and the way the ship’s movement reshapes the view keeps the action fresh long after the initial run.
Blaster (sometimes just called Blaster) for the Atari 5200 is an unofficial sequel to Robotron 2084, set in the year 2085. In this frantic shooter the player must rescue trapped humans while battling waves of alien enemies. The action takes place across a series of increasingly difficult levels, each filled with swarms of foes that must be destroyed to protect the survivors. The game’s premise centers on the player’s mission to save humanity from the alien invasion.
