Black Belt for the Atari 5200 never saw an official release, but the prototype offers a curious glimpse into what could have been a martial‑arts counterpart to Broderbund’s classic Karateka. Players choose a black‑belt rank that sets the difficulty, then navigate a series of eight rooms, using the keypad to trigger a surprisingly varied set of karate moves. The lack of collision detection means the combat feels more like a choreographed routine than a true fight, and the enemies remain untouchable. Because the game’s engine stalls after the eighth room, there’s no way to actually defeat the opponents or advance further. Despite its unfinished state, the title’s ambitious control scheme and visual style make it a fascinating footnote in Atari’s library.
