Astro Chase drops you into a 2‑D scrolling starfield where you pilot a laser‑armed ship around Earth, hunting down the 16 looming Mega‑Mines that threaten to explode the planet. The joystick lets you thrust in any direction while a separate fire button shoots lasers, so you can dodge saucers and blast mines simultaneously; the ship even lets you move one way and fire another. Scattered across the map are eight shield depots that grant temporary invincibility, and four corner generators where you can top up a finite energy reserve before you’re forced to limp back to Earth. After clearing all the mines a level speeds up, and every fourth stage the game pauses for a brief cutscene as your craft returns to the blue marble. Though contemporary reviewers raved about its groundbreaking graphics, a looping 1812 Overture, and the novelty of “single‑thrust propulsion,” later critics have called the experience all flash and little depth.
In Astro Chase you take the role of a lone spaceship pilot tasked with saving Earth from an imminent alien threat. The opening scene shows a spaceport in a simulated 3D view: a flying saucer hovers to the right while the player’s character walks out of a terminal, waves goodbye, and beams aboard the ship. Gameplay unfolds on a 2D scrolling map that circles the planet, where eight massive Mega‑Mines drift toward Earth and must be destroyed before they make contact. A fleet of chasing saucers constantly harasses you, adding pressure to the demolition effort. Every four levels the ship returns to Earth for a brief cut‑scene animation, reinforcing the mission’s urgency before the next wave of mines appears.
