Summary
WWF WrestleFest hit arcades in the early ’90s as Technōs Japan’s follow‑up to the original Superstars cabinet, spreading through Technōs’s North American and Japanese networks while Tecmo handled Europe and Australasia. The game upgraded its visuals and sound, packing more vocal samples—including ringside introductions by Mike McGuirk and Gene Okerlund’s classic cut‑scenes.
Two play styles set it apart: a Royal Rumble mode where you battle a shrinking field alone, and Saturday Night’s Main Event tag‑team mode, which lets you and a friend coordinate double‑team moves and power‑ups when a teammate hangs on the apron too long. The roster of ten icons—Hulk Hogan, Ultimate Warrior, Jake "The Snake" Roberts, Earthquake and the non‑playable Legion of Doom among them—each brought signature maneuvers to the fight.
The arcade buzz was immediate. It rose to the second spot in RePlay’s October 1991 U.S. charts and clinched the title of America’s highest‑grossing conversion kit in 1992, while Japanese listings showed it as the third‑most‑popular game in December of that year. Sinclair User crowned it Best Beat ’Em Up of 1991, praising its character variety and replay value.
