Summary
WWF Superstars hit the arcades in 1989 as Technōs Japan’s first foray into WWF‑licensed wrestling. You pick a two‑person tag team from a roster that includes Hulk Hogan, "Macho Man" Randy Savage, The Ultimate Warrior, Big Boss Man, "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan and The Honky Tonk Man, then battle through a series of New York and Tokyo match‑ups. The game’s grappling system feels simple yet distinct: a basic grab can turn into a toss, a rope slam or a headlock that unlocks two wrestler‑specific moves, while each character also has standing strikes, running attacks, turnbuckle dives and even a table‑swing when you step outside the ropes.
After three victories the final showdown pits you against the Mega Bucks—Ted DiBiase and André the Giant—who aren’t selectable but appear as a boss tag team. Most grapple moves fail on André’s massive frame, though Honky Tonk Man’s noogie and Big Boss Man’s headbutt still work. The arcade version even let you see Miss Elizabeth, Mean Gene Okerlund and other personalities in brief cut‑scenes.
In Japan the title ranked third among table‑type arcade units in November 1989, and in the U.S. it topped the RePlay conversion‑kit charts in January 1990, cementing its place as a memorable early wrestling game.
Storyline
WWF Superstars (Arcade) opens with a series of colorful cut‑scenes that showcase Ted DiBiase, André the Giant, Virgil, Mean Gene Okerlund and Miss Elizabeth. Before the first bout, the player’s chosen tag team makes a grand entrance on the iconic “ring cart” that fans recognized from WrestleMania III and VI.
After winning three consecutive matches, the duo earns the right to face the Mega Bucks – the Million Dollar Man Ted DiBiase paired with André the Giant – in a high‑stakes final round. Victory triggers a newspaper headline proclaiming the team as new champions, adding a satisfying narrative payoff.
The game then sends the champions to a second city for another trio of matches, one of which pits them against DiBiase again. The climax is a final showdown with DiBiase and André, after which the arcade experience concludes.
