Summary

Wolf Fang: Kuuga 2001 hit Japanese arcades in 1991 and later appeared abroad as Rohga: Armor Force, a curious mix of side‑scrolling shooter and platformer. You pilot a mech that can hover along slanted backgrounds or land on higher platforms, with full platform‑style controls – you can face either way, duck, jump, and even aim your gun upward at a 45‑degree angle while moving. Holding the fire button lets you toggle aim direction on the fly, and four different mech chassis (walking, hovering, four‑legged, six‑wheeled) let you experiment with tactics.\n\nWeapon upgrades include a rapid‑fire Vulcan, spread‑shot Cluster, explosive Grenade gun and precise Laser, and you can recruit up to four friendly Oceanic defenders who mount on your mech and cover blind spots. The hull supports up to eight health points; once shattered the pilot is ejected and reduced to a fragile one‑hit state.\n\nThe overseas version drops the story cut‑scenes and stage‑selection that gave the Japanese cabinet four distinct endings, opting instead for an uninterrupted twelve‑stage run, mirroring the Japanese expert mode.

Storyline

Wolf Fang: Kuhga 2001 drops players into a near‑future conflict two years after the 1999 military occupation of New York City. The shadowy organization Ragnarok—also known as DAGGER—has vanished after an airborne defeat, but it resurfaces in Oceania, seizing the massive mech factories and cities of Australia and New Zealand. Their goal is to commandeer unfinished, ultra‑deadly mechs and unleash them in a chaotic campaign. In response, the United States Air Force and the Royal Australian Air Force form a joint strike force, recruiting the world’s top mech pilots. Players take the role of those pilots, fighting to liberate the occupied territories and decide whether the battle ends in Australia or, through their actions, in New Zealand.
