Summary
Virtua Fighter 2 showcases Sega AM2’s ambition under Yu Suzuki, debuting on the purpose‑built Model 2 hardware that introduced texture‑mapped 3D characters and a smooth 60 FPS experience. A $2 million Lockheed Martin graphics processor was repurposed for the arcade board, allowing over 1,200 motion patterns and 500 new moves that pushed the series into a new visual era. Critics praised the lack of slowdown and the crisp animation, and the title quickly became one of Sega’s best‑selling arcade machines, with more than 40,000 cabinets shipped worldwide.
The game’s 3‑D arena lets players fight on platforms ranging from a tiny stage to an 82‑meter square, using an eight‑way stick and three buttons for guard, punch and kick. Nine veterans return, while Shun Di, a drunken‑fist master, and Lion Rafale, a mantis‑style kung fu prodigy, add the unique “axis strike” mechanic that emphasizes depth. Matches run best‑of‑three, and the ring can be set to “infinite” energy for mock sumo bouts where the goal is simply to push the opponent out.
Arcade cabinets came in two flavors: a standard 26‑inch monitor and a deluxe 50‑inch projection unit, both built on the Model 2A architecture. The board is also conversion‑friendly, able to host titles like Sonic Championship, Fighting Vipers, and even Dead Or Alive with a simple harness swap, making the machine a versatile hub for 90s arcade enthusiasts.
Storyline
Virtua Fighter 2 centers on a prestigious World Fighting Tournament where the world’s top fighters compete for fame and honour. The event is secretly run by the sinister J6 syndicate, which plans to harvest the combat data to perfect its fighting cyborg, Dural.
One year after eight of the toughest, fastest fighters clashed in the first tournament, the call goes out for the second World Fighting Tournament. Dural, the boss character, uses a move‑set assembled from techniques of other fighters, reflecting J6’s ultimate goal.
