Summary
TwinBee rolls out of Konami’s Bubble System hardware as one of the first cartoon‑styled vertical shooters, helping birth the “cute ’em up” feel. The player pilots a whimsical ship (TwinBee for player one, WinBee for player two) using an eight‑way stick and separate fire and bomb buttons, and the two can sync their vessels horizontally or vertically for a more powerful joint attack.
Power‑ups come from hidden bells under clouds; continuous fire changes their color. A white bell upgrades to twin cannons, blue ramps up speed, green creates duplicate ships, and a red bell adds a protective barrier. Standard yellow bells only boost the score, and occasional stars wipe the screen. If the ship loses both arms, an ambulance must be reached for repairs, adding a distinctive risk‑management layer.
The game quickly topped Japanese arcade charts in March 1985 and earned praise for its cooperative mechanics and innovative power‑up system, with reviewers noting the green‑bell duplication as a fore‑father of later option‑style features. In 2022 Konami revived TwinBee’s legacy through a indie‑dev contest, inspiring the sequel project TwinBee Loop!
