Summary
I spent countless hours navigating the neon‑glow maze of Turtles, a quirky early‑80s Konami arcade title (the Sega release even wore the tongue‑in‑cheek name Turpin). Question‑mark boxes peppered the screen either sprouted a little “kidturtle” that needed escorting home, or released a swarm of beetles that forced a frantic dash.
My only weapon? Bombs that acted more like proximity mines, picked up in the maze’s center and dropped to stun those irate bugs. Each floor of the towering building represented a new maze, and after surviving eight levels a brief cutscene showed the rescued hatchlings marching out with their savior before the loop restarted.
The game’s odd charm earned a 1984 Arkie Award citation for the Odyssey² port, though some reviewers blasted its slow pace and clunky joystick. Still, the handheld version on Entex and the later PV‑1000 port keep the goofy, rescue‑the‑turtles formula alive for retro fans.
Storyline
In Turtles on Arcade, you control a lone turtle tasked with rescuing baby turtles, known as kidturtles, and guiding them back to safety. Each time you step on a question‑mark icon, a kidturtle hops onto your back and a house appears somewhere on the level. The goal is to navigate the maze‑like floors while dodging roaming beetles that can end your run. After you successfully deliver eight kidturtles across eight floors, a short cutscene plays, showing the rescued hatchlings following their hero out of the building. The simple yet charming premise blends classic arcade timing with a lighthearted rescue mission.
