Summary
Truxton, known in Japan as Tatsujin, still feels like a masterclass in bullet‑hell precision. You pilot the Super Fighter against the alien Gidans, swapping between the wide red beam, the homing blue laser and the sharp green straight shot while a handful of powerful bombs keep the onslaught at bay. The five stages loop forever, with each cycle nudging the difficulty up, rewarding players who can remember the exact spot for every power‑up and hidden bonus. Toaplan’s knack for designing ‘safespots’ keeps the action relentless yet fair.
The 2020s ports on GOG and Steam preserve the arcade’s pixel‑perfect feel and add a suite of conveniences: instant rewinds, quick‑save slots, auto‑fire assists, and a very easy mode for newcomers. Online leaderboards let you pit single‑credit runs against the world, and a built‑in replay recorder captures those impossible survival moments. With the rights now held by Yuge’s Tatsujin company, Truxton lives on as a celebrated example of how memorization‑driven design can stay thrilling decades later.
Storyline
Truxton takes place in deep space, where the alien Gidan armada, commanded by the ruthless Dogurava, is assaulting the fictional planet Borogo. The invaders arrive on five massive asteroid fortresses that loom over the planet’s orbit. During the opening assault a Borogo cargo barge is struck, but a surviving pilot manages to escape.
The pilot, identified as Tatsuo, jumps into the last operational craft – the Super Fighter, the series’ most powerful assault ship. From there he battles wave after wave of Gidan tanks, guns and explosives, trying to halt the invasion. His ultimate goal is to destroy or divert the asteroid strongholds before they can crush Borogo.
