Summary
Top Hunter: Roddy & Cathy thrills with a dual‑lane system that lets you flip between a foreground and background path at will, turning every level into a layered puzzle as well as a beat ’em up. The joystick‑plus‑attack combos feel right at home with SNK’s fighting heritage, letting players unleash special moves with directional inputs. I’ve always loved how the four elemental worlds—Forest, Ice, Wind and Fire—reshape themselves depending on the order you tackle them.
The arcade cartridge earned the tongue‑in‑cheek badge “100 Mega Shock” because its 112‑mebibit size blew past the era’s norm, even dwarfing the biggest SNES carts. Co‑op mode lets a friend jump in as Cathy while you pilot Roddy, and the game even tracks global high scores for a competitive edge. After its Neo Geo debut it resurfaced on Neo Geo CD, Wii’s Virtual Console, and later as part of the SNK Arcade Classics Vol. 1 anthology, keeping the visuals fresh for new consoles. Back in North America RePlay listed it as the sixteenth most‑popular arcade title, a testament to its vibrant visuals and tight two‑player action.
Storyline
In Top Hunter: Roddy & Cathy, the galaxy’s premier bounty hunters Roddy and Cathy are dispatched to halt a ruthless band of space pirates known as the Klaptons. The Klaptons have seized four elemental planets, each ruled by a high‑ranking commander—Sly, Misty, Mr. Bigman, and Dr. Burn—who offer huge bounties for their capture.
The duo battles through waves of pirate forces, destroying the commanders’ war machines, but each foe manages to escape. Their pursuit culminates in the Last Hunt, where Roddy and Cathy infiltrate Captain Klapton’s massive mothership.
Inside the flagship they confront the four commanders once more, defeat them, and finally take down Captain Klapton himself, ending the pirate threat to the cosmos.
