Summary

The NewZealand Story (often just called New Zealand Story) is a surprisingly deep platformer that feels more like a sprawling maze than a typical arcade run‑and‑gun. I’m constantly amazed by how the levels scroll in all directions, with a tiny mini‑map in the corner that pins the exit and hidden secrets. The game hands you an endless stream of arrows at first, but scattered power‑ups let you switch to bombs, lasers or even bouncing fireballs, and the real fun kicks in when you can hop into balloons, blimps or UFOs that you either find or steal from enemies. Secret warp portals pepper the stages, opening shortcuts that can shave seconds off the invisible timer—otherwise a cheeky red devil appears with a “Hurry Up!” jingle and ends you in an instant. Occasionally, a death by projectile drops you into a quirky “Heaven” round where you can chase a special ending or find a hidden way back into the action.

Storyline

In The NewZealand Story you play as Tiki, a kiwi bird on a mission to rescue his girlfriend and several kiwi chick friends who have been captured. The kidnappers are described as a large blue leopard seal in the arcade’s official description, while some accounts refer to the foe as an evil walrus. As Tiki you must dodge a variety of enemies while navigating scrolling, maze‑like levels. At the end of each stage you free one of the trapped chicks from its cage, gradually reuniting the flock.
