Summary
The King of Fighters '94 introduced an 8‑team, 3‑on‑3 structure that changed the usual one‑on‑one format familiar from other fighting games. Each side represents a different region—Japan and the USA field original squads while Italy, Mexico, Korea, England, China and Brazil field veterans from Fatal Fury, Art of Fight and Ikari Warriors. Picking up Japan’s fire‑wielding Kyo Kusanagi alongside Benimaru Nikaido and Goro Daimon gives fresh lead chemistry among the familiar characters like Terry, Andy, and Joe.\n\nThe match feels like orchestrating a small war; you decide the order your fighters appear and can summon a teammate for a timely support attack that swings momentum. Four-button controls echo older SNK titles but are layered with a power gauge that fuels enhanced attacks and powerful Supers. Designer Takashi Nishiyama tapped new director Masanori Kuwasashi to fuse every popular SNK hero into one cohesive tournament, creating an all‑star experience that still charms retro enthusiasts today.
Storyline
In The King of Fighters '94 (often just called KOF ’94), the notorious arms dealer Rugal Bernstein grows bored with the lack of worthy opponents and launches a new King of Fighters tournament. He sends out 24 invitations, organizing the competition as a team‑based event with eight three‑person squads, each representing a different nation.
When the Japanese team emerges victorious, Rugal’s secretary Mature summons them to his massive aircraft carrier, the Black Noah, for a final showdown. Rugal reveals his true motive: to defeat the champions and preserve them as stone statues, adding them to his grim collection. Kyo Kusanagi, horrified to see his father among the statues, vows revenge. After the team finally overcomes Rugal, he triggers the carrier’s self‑destruct, but the heroes escape and reflect on their hard‑won triumph.
