Summary
The King of Fighters 2001 marked the series' first step out of SNK's shadow, with Korean studio Eolith steering development and former SNK staff contributing through BrezzaSoft. Released on Neo‑Geo MVS arcades on November 15 2001, it concludes the NESTS Chronicles arc as the eighth installment.
What set KOF 2001 apart was the Tactical Order System, which lets players pick any mix of one‑to‑four fighters and up‑to‑three Strikers. Adding more Strikers speeds up the Power Gauge and raises its maximum stock, while striker‑free teams get a longer gauge but only a single stock. This flexibility reshapes combo possibilities and how super specials are deployed.
The game also introduced Wire Damage, with Critical Wire pushing opponents across the screen for follow‑up attacks and Counter Wire providing a defensive bounce. Players can cancel moves directly into a Striker summon, and several characters received Wire Whip techniques that fling foes to the other side of the stage. These tools give a fresh rhythm to the classic 2‑D team battles.
Storyline
The King of Fighters 2001 (often called KOF 2001) concludes the NESTS Chronicles. After the Zero Cannon obliterated South Town at the end of KOF 2000, the NESTS cartel stages its own worldwide tournament, hoping to eliminate rivals and showcase its power. The Hero Team wins, boards a blimp that turns out to be a spaceship, and confronts Original Zero, who is backed by Ron, Krizalid and the black lion Glaugan. Zero is defeated, the ship explodes, and the heroes are thrust onto NESTS’s orbiting satellite.
Inside the satellite they battle the cartel’s leader, NESTS, who is slain by Igniz—son of the former CEO who now claims godhood. Igniz reveals that K’, Kula, Krizalid, K9999 and Whip were his artificial creations, then assaults the finalists. Kyo, Iori and the other team leaders intervene, defeat Igniz and trigger the satellite’s self‑destruct. The craft crashes into the ocean, where Ron rescues the survivors.
K’ saves a drowning Kula, earning the gratitude of Kula and her guardian Diana, who join his side. Angel, K9999 and Foxy survive off‑screen, while the remaining NESTS agents lay down their arms and start new lives.
