Summary
Super Gem Fighter Mini Mix, known in the West as Pocket Fighter, takes the caped‑up cast of Street Fighter, Darkstalkers and Red Earth and shrinks them into cheeky super‑deformed avatars that look straight out of Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo. The core thrill is a frantic scramble for glowing gems that spawn whenever a hit lands; each color feeds a special‑move gauge, letting you level up attacks on the fly. Add to that elemental orbs—ice, lightning and the rest—that can freeze or petrify an opponent, plus occasional treasure chests and food items that refill health.
The UI splits into two main bars—life and a super meter that holds up to nine “Mighty Combo” stocks—and three sub‑bars that track the gem‑powered moves. Pulling off a Mega Crush flings all collected gems at the foe, while Flash or “Costume” combos sprinkle the battle with goofy outfit swaps and over‑the‑top finishes.
After its arcade debut in ’97, the game migrated to PlayStation (still called Pocket Fighter), Saturn, WonderSwan, and later resurfaced in the Street Fighter Alpha Anthology and the 2022 Capcom Fighting Collection, giving a new generation a chance to taste its absurd, gem‑fueled chaos.
Storyline
In Super Gem Fighter Mini Mix, each fighter pursues a quirky personal quest that drives the ending. Ryu roams as a wandering martial artist hoping Tessa will point him toward worthy opponents, only to be sent against the mysterious Hauzer. Ken, after a honeymoon drift with his wife Eliza, chases a tea date with Morrigan, winning a challenge but getting caught by a jealous Eliza.
Zangief, a Sambo‑wrestling champion, begs pop star Felicia to join a Russian concert tour; after a bout she agrees, delighting the Russian president. Chun‑Li, Interpol’s top cop, misidentifies Felicia as a missing zoo cat and then sets off to locate the real feline. Ibuki, the only original SFIII playable character, searches Harajuku for Sakura’s ice‑cream clue, ends up sparring with Guy and declining a baked‑potato offer.
Hsien‑Ko and her sister Mei‑Ling hunt Zangief for a part‑time gig, while Tessa seeks a magical wand that ultimately turns her into a penguin. Dan tries to recruit Sakura as his first student, receives a scathing letter, and breaks down in tears. Akuma, displaced from his island‑turned‑amusement park, is led by Hsien‑Ko to a forest graveyard to train on night‑time zombies.
