Summary
SRD: Super Real Darwin drops you into a fast‑paced vertical scrolling shooter where a tiny fighter can literally transform. Developed and published by Data East as the follow‑up to the 1986 hit Darwin 4078, the craft mutates into new shapes whenever you grab weapon power‑ups, each form changing the ship’s silhouette as well as its firepower. The mechanic rewards players who hunt down the colorful upgrade icons, letting the ship evolve from a modest jet into larger, more lethal configurations.
In Japan the game made a noticeable impact; Game Machine listed Super Real Darwin as the third‑most‑successful table arcade unit in its December 1 1987 issue. Its sleek graphics and mutable ship design helped it stand out in crowded 1980s arcades.
Storyline
In SRD: Super Real Darwin (often just called Super Real Darwin), the conflict begins on the high‑tech world of Lakya. Its citizens unintentionally unleash the planet’s primal life force, known as Evol. The drifting Evol is captured by the neighboring planet Cokyo, whose leaders launch the Shlohe project to turn the captured energy into living bio‑ships and weapons for an invasion of Lakya. In response, Lakya’s defenders deploy their own evolving fighter ships, turning the tide of the battle. The game’s narrative pits these two evolving forces against each other as the war over Evol unfolds.
