Summary

Sega Ninja, released in Japan as Ninja Princess, instantly strikes you with its cheery, cartoon‑style graphics crafted by Flicky artist Yoshiki Kawasaki and Phantasy Star veteran Reiko Kodama.
The game follows Princess Kurumi, a kunoichi who bursts from a palanquin and battles her way through feudal‑Japan backdrops with an endless stream of throwing knives, occasional shuriken upgrades, and even a brief invisibility spell. Stages mostly scroll vertically, though one surprisingly challenges you to scale a wall, and you’ll meet samurai, rival ninja and even dogs as you smash through hordes. Despite its lightweight look, the title topped Japan’s arcade tables in April 1985, proving that its fast‑paced run‑and‑gun action resonated with players. It never became a household name here, which only adds to its cult‑classic charm for collectors.

Storyline

Sega Ninja (often just called The Ninja) drops you into Japan’s Edo period, around 1630, in the western province of Ohkami. The land is under the iron fist of the evil tyrant Gyokuro, who has seized power and plunged the region into oppression. As the lone ninja hero, your mission is to cut through Gyokuro’s forces, dismantle his rule, and bring peace back to the people of Ohkami. The game’s story is a straightforward fight for freedom set against a historic backdrop.
