Summary

Salamander, known as Life Force in its North American arcade debut, is a Konami shooter that built on the Gradius formula with a tighter power‑up system. Instead of the classic bar‑graph, you collect capsules that can be stacked and combined, and any “multiples” you earn stay attached to the ship even after a hit, ready to be reclaimed. The game shines in two‑player co‑op, letting one pilot the classic Vic Viper while a partner flies the sleek Lord British craft, with continue rules that can be set via DIP switches for fair or frantic play. Stages alternate between horizontal sweeps and vertical dives, giving the action a rhythmic rhythm. The Life Force version swaps the usual star‑field for fleshy, web‑like backgrounds and frames the whole adventure as a plunge into a massive, bacteria‑infested alien organism, adding a uniquely organic flair to the experience.

Storyline

Salamander (known as Life Force in the U.S.) drops you into the belly of a massive alien organism that’s been overtaken by a bacterial infection. Each level is framed as a different part of the creature’s body, with on‑screen narration announcing zones like “Enter stomach muscle zone” or “Bio‑mechanical brain attack.” Your twin‑ship flies through these organic corridors, blasting waves of hostile cells and bio‑mechanical defenses that protect the infection. The goal is to clear each region, purging the pathogen and forcing the alien’s internal systems to shut down. By the final stage you’re essentially performing an interstellar surgery on a living enemy.
