Summary

Raiden Fighters lets you pick from seven high‑powered aircraft, ranging from the classic Raiden Mk II to the sleek Judge Spear borrowed from Viper Phase 1. Each ship feels distinct, giving a fresh spin on the familiar vertical‑shooting action.

The game is split into three perilous missions; the first two consist of three stages each, and the order of the first two stages can be swapped for a bit of variety.

Regardless of the order, the third stage of each of those missions mirrors the final mission, so the climax feels familiar yet challenging. I love how the flexible stage layout keeps the pacing tight while still rewarding mastery of each fighter.

Storyline

Raiden Fighters is a classic arcade shooter whose storyline isn’t spelled out on screen, leaving players to piece together the narrative from subtle cues. The opening prologue of its sequel, Raiden Fighters 2, hints at a continuation of the original’s hidden plot, tying the two games together.

In the sequel, the player controls a squadron tasked with crushing a massive guerrilla uprising led by a ruthless dictator. The mission briefings make it clear that the squadron’s objective is to suppress this insurgency and restore order.

All of the action is set in eastern Asia; each mission’s briefing overlays a war plan on a map that highlights China and Japan, reinforcing the regional backdrop of the conflict.
