Summary
Rage of the Dragons drops you into a town dominated by a twisted cult, where two fighters team up against the elemental dragons – Black, Red, Blue and White. I’m constantly swapping between my partners, letting the idle one recharge while the other dishes out combos; the auxiliary meter builds with each hit, unlocking Counter Attacks and explosive Super Moves that feel very satisfying.
What blew me away was the sheer variety – fourteen characters mean seven default duos and nearly 80 custom pairings, even a secret Billy & Jimmy ending that rewards deep exploration. The game's homage to Double Dragon shines through its gritty aesthetics and the retro‑arcade vibe, backed by Toshikazu Tanaka’s pulsing soundtrack.
Fans have kept the hype alive: a Spanish magazine praised it, Japan’s Monthly Arcadia listed it among the top releases, and Complex now counts it as one of the best SNK fighters ever made.
Storyline
Rage of the Dragons follows the Lewis brothers, Billy and Jimmy, as they battle an evil dragon spirit menacing Sunshine City. Billy is a famed street racer skilled in Ryuzuiken, while Jimmy, haunted by his girlfriend Mariah’s death, returns as a street fighter drawn by the dragon’s resonance.
Their allies include Lynn, a half‑Chinese half‑American Ryuzuiken master, and Sonia, a former assassin who falls for Jimmy. Dragon‑hunter Radel partners with psychic Annie Murakami to hunt cult leader Johann, who wields the Black Dragon. Orphan siblings Cassandra Murata and Oni Inomura seek answers to their past, aided by exorcist Elias Patrick and traumatized girl Alice Carroll.
Other fighters are JosĂ© “Pepe” RodrĂguez, empowered by a Quetzalcoatl scroll, his friend Pupa Salgueiro searching for her brother, disco‑fanatic Mr. Jones, and wrestler Kang Jae‑Mo. The single‑player tournament culminates with two bosses: grudge‑bearing gang member Abubo Rao and Johann, the cult leader possessing the Black Dragon. Completing the tournament with the Billy & Jimmy pairing unlocks a hidden ending.
