Summary

R-Type II builds on the original’s iconic ship, giving pilots the R‑9C—a slightly reshaped R‑9 with a homing‑capable wave cannon that charges through distinct blue and red gauges. Press‑and‑hold the fire button to swell the beam, then release at the right moment for a powerful burst, while a second button toggles the detachable Force unit.

Two fresh weapons raise the tactical stakes: the Search Laser, a semi‑homing shot that can bend up to 45°, and the shotgun‑style laser that fans out after a short travel. An anti‑ground bomb expands the missile arsenal, allowing direct attacks on terrain hazards.

Arcade gameplay tightens the challenge—six stages replace the longer level count, but enemy numbers, durability, and bullet patterns surge dramatically, demanding precise dodging and clever weapon swaps. The familiar checkpoint revival system saves you, yet the true ending only surfaces after a second, harder playthrough, rewarding perseverance and mastery of the R‑9C’s upgraded arsenal.

Storyline

R-Type II opens with the player's fighter emerging from a shattered Bydo base, the wreckage hinting at the enemy's relentless advance. The second stage plunges into a massive cavern where cascading waterfalls periodically block the ship's path, forcing careful timing. In the third level the crew confronts a fleet of enormous Bydo battleships, each one dwarfing the player’s craft and demanding precise firepower.
Levels four and five keep the tension high as the terrain itself reshapes, with platforms rising and falling and obstacles appearing in unpredictable patterns. The climax unfolds on the Bydo home world, a sterile planet where the alien organisms are being cloned and mass‑produced, and the final showdown determines the fate of humanity.
