Summary
Pulstar feels like a love letter to classic side‑scroll shooters while sneaking in its own twists. The Dino246 shoots a forward projectile that can be charged: a blue‑lit half builds a huge, screen‑clearing blast, while holding the button longer fills the red half for a rapid torrent of tiny shots. When you grab a power‑up a shimmering orb hangs from the ship’s tail, acting as a shield that can bounce enemy fire or be smashed into foes for extra damage.
What makes it stand out is the fully pre‑rendered 3D art—unusual for a 1995 arcade cabinet—and cinematic cut‑scenes that pull you into its sci‑fi world. The soundtrack, crafted by former Capcom composers Harumi Fujita and Yasuaki Fujita, still sounds crisp on the Neo Geo AES, CD and modern console ports such as the Arcade Archives collection.
Players quickly learn that mastering the charge meter and the orb’s defensive maneuver is key, because the boss battles are relentless. The game’s steep difficulty earned mixed reactions, but the striking visuals and strategic shooting keep it a cult favorite among retro fans.
Storyline
Pulstar drops you into the year 2248, when a mysterious signal from Mars is first detected. Earth’s scientists broadcast a warning, but eight years later the alien fleet arrives, striking at human ships near Neptune. The conflict spreads across the Solar System; Neptune is ripped apart, Jupiter ignites into a star, and rising seas drown more than half of Earth’s continents.
You pilot the starship Dino246, the lone vessel of the Pulstar attack force, with Kaoru Yamazaki as its sole surviving fighter pilot. Her mission is to sweep the Solar System of the hostile alien race, battling through eight stages and confronting massive bosses.
Each level pushes the Dino246 deeper into the devastated system, offering a fast‑paced shoot‑‘em‑up that blends classic arcade action with a desperate fight for humanity’s survival.
