Summary

Psycho Soldier is an SNK side‑scrolling action arcade gem that marks the debut of Athena Asamiya, later a KOF staple. Players pick either Athena or her friend Kensou, both wielding a unique "Psycho Energy" gauge that fuels a rotating set of energy spheres. Those spheres can form a protective shield, be fired at foes, or—when the gauge is full—scatter into a screen‑wide devastation. Destructible rocks often hide power‑up items that boost your energy bar, adding a tactile feel to the scrolling stages. Collecting a special green‑egg item triggers a transformation: Athena becomes a fiery phoenix, Kensou a green dragon, each gaining a breath attack and a ramming move that lasts until the stage boss is down or energy runs out.

Storyline

Psycho Soldier is set many years after the events of the original arcade game Athena. In Athena, the heroine—named after the Greek goddess—traversed otherworldly realms, defeated monsters, and finally returned to heaven, where she faded from mortal memory. The sequel shifts to modern Japan, where Athena Asamiya, a direct descendant of the ancient hero, discovers powerful psychic abilities. She dreams of using those powers to protect people and to launch a career as a pop idol. When a wave of evil beings threatens her hometown, Athena teams up with fellow psychic Sie Kensou, and together they battle the menace to safeguard their friends and city.
