Summary
Power Instinct drops you into a classic 2‑D fighter that feels like a love‑letter to Street Fighter II, but with a quirky twist. The arcade cabinet only offers the core arcade and two‑player modes, while later console ports spruced things up with practice, battle, time‑attack and life‑attack stages for solo tinkering. You pick from eight distinct characters, each equipped with a double‑jump, a run‑attack and at least two signature specials, and every fighter delivers a single, cheeky win quote in the English version.
What really sets the game apart is its transformation gimmick: a handful of combatants can shift appearance and fighting style mid‑match by pulling off specific moves, adding a layer of strategy that feels both absurd and rewarding. The unplayable boss, Oume Gōketsuji, is just a palette‑swap of her sister Otane, serving as the final hurdle. Back in December 1993, Game Machine even crowned the title the most successful table arcade unit in Japan, a testament to its challenging yet addictive gameplay.
Storyline
Power Instinct (also known as Gōketsuji Ichizoku) pits members of the Gōketsuji clan against each other in a worldwide tournament. Every five years the clan gathers for a one‑on‑one fighting contest, and the winner’s family earns the right to rule the clan. This edition of the tournament is held to find a successor for the 78‑year‑old matriarch Oume Gōketsuji, who will step down as head.
