Summary
Power Instinct 2 burst onto Japanese arcades in October 1994, expanding the roster to thirteen fighters and a single boss, Otane Gōketsuji. The most noticeable gameplay tweak is the new "Stress" meter, which swells whenever attacks are blocked or received; once it’s full you can unleash a super move and briefly cloak your character in a protective flame that repels nearby foes. Among the five fresh faces, the stern matriarch Oshima Gōketsuji presides over the clan, while the mischievous witch Kurara Hananokōji can transform into roller‑skating Super Kurara when she gathers enough power. The older Kanji Kokuin, Oume’s ex‑husband, fights with bulging muscles that collapse into a frail cane‑wielding form if his special fails, and his grandson Kintarō Kokuin brings a pet fish, a bear, and a dog‑costumed alter‑ego named Pochi to the fray. The exotic Sahad Asran Ryuto summons djinn energy from a magic lamp, hoping to impress his crush, Angela Belti. The arcade version proved popular, ranking third among table units in Japan’s October 1994 Game Machine chart, and later received a PlayStation port with extra modes tied to the series’ next arcade entry, Goketsuji Legends.
Storyline
Power Instinct 2 picks up right after the events of its predecessor. Otane Gōketsuji has just beaten her older sister Oume in the previous tournament, securing her place as clan leader. Oume, with the covert aid of their mother Oshima Gōketsuji, kidnaps the sleeping Otane, tosses her into the ocean and forges a letter claiming Otane has renounced the leadership. The forged note triggers the clan’s rule that a new tournament must begin immediately to choose a successor. Despite the plot, Otane survives, resurfaces, and enters the fresh competition to challenge the winner and reclaim her rightful position as head of the Gōketsuji clan.
