Summary
Ninja Commando delivers fast‑paced vertical scrolling gun‑fire that feels like a ninja‑themed Ikari Warriors. You can pick one of three distinct ninjas—each a descendant of a historic clan— and unleash scroll‑based ninpo attacks, death blows and on‑the‑fly transformations for varied offense. The game also rewards skill with scroll collectibles that power up those special moves, and it supports a two‑player couch co‑op that stays surprisingly tight despite the screen‑filling chaos. Though the stages march through wildly different eras, the core run‑and‑gun loop never loses its rhythm, letting players focus on combo timing rather than plot exposition.
In its home‑court arcades, Ninja Commando hit the top of the leaderboards, ranking eleventh in Japan’s table‑unit charts and cracking the top ten in RePlay’s popularity list. Neo Geo Freak gave it a modest 12 out of 20, noting the solid mechanics but repetitive level design. Those numbers still make it a memorable slice of early‑90s arcade action for anyone chasing retro thrills.
Storyline
In Ninja Commando, an elite trio of young ninjas—Joe Tiger, an American Kōga‑ryū descendant who throws shuriken; Ryu Eagle, the 23rd heir of Fūma Kotarō wielding magical fireballs; and Rayar Dragon, a British Iga‑ryū ninja armed with a bow that shoots flaming spirit arrows—must protect history from the death‑merchant plot of Spider and his Mars Corporation. The villains plan to use a time‑machine to erase the past and seize the future, forcing the three heroes to chase them through seven distinct eras. Their journey takes them to the Sengoku period, where Ryu avenges his ancestor by slaying Oda Nobunaga; to Ancient Egypt, battling a floating recreation of Tutankhamen; to the Stone Age, to China’s Three Kingdoms confronting Lu Bu; and even into World War II. Each era tests their skills as they fight to keep the timeline intact and stop chaos from spreading.
