Summary

New Rally‑X builds on the classic maze‑driving formula with modest visual upgrades and a smoother learning curve. The blue car still darts through a grid of corridors, racing to snag ten yellow flags before the fuel gauge empties, while red pursuers and fixed boulders keep the tension high.
A new “Lucky Flag” (marked with an L) awards extra points based on remaining fuel, and the special flag doubles scores for subsequent pickups, adding strategic depth. Players can drop a smoke screen—consuming fuel—to freeze chasing cars momentarily, and every fourth level triggers a “Challenging Stage” where enemies stay still until time runs out.
Though Midway only offered New Rally‑X as an upgrade kit in the United States, the game saw a far larger production run and strong popularity in Japan, where the altered road layouts reduced dead ends compared to the original.
