Summary

Neo Bomberman spins the classic top‑down bomb‑placing formula into a maze‑filled arcade adventure exclusively for the Neo Geo MVS. You blaze through zones bristling with monsters, laying bombs to shred soft blocks and reveal upgrades like remote‑detonated explosives, speed boosts and longer blast ranges, while each cleared stage unlocks a boss gate that cranks up the challenge with conveyor belts and other traps.

Produce! and Hudson Soft teamed up for the title, featuring a two‑player co‑op campaign where a partner can drop in to keep the action rolling. After the single‑player run, a separate battle mode lets ten characters square off against up to three AI opponents across four arenas, supporting one‑on‑one duels if a second person joins.

The game debuted at the JAMMA trade fair in September 1996 and landed in arcades in May 1997, never reaching home consoles. Its bright sprite work, crunchy sound design from Now Production, and the novelty of rescuing allies or even riding enemies earned it praise from reviewers, and it remained the last original Bomberman arcade release until 2018’s Bombergirl.

Storyline

Neo Bomberman centers on a chaotic Bomberman Tournament where the iconic White Bomberman and his rival Black Bomberman, along with a host of other fighters, gather to compete. The event is abruptly shattered when the mad scientist Professor Bagura arrives in his mobile fortress, captures the participants and locks them in cages.

Determined to free their friends, White and Black Bomberman team up and launch a daring assault on Bagura’s stronghold. Along the way they confront Atomic Bomber, a powerful new creation under Bagura’s command, and ultimately aim to stop the professor’s scheme and restore the tournament.
