Summary

Mr. Goemon throws you into a frantic side‑scroll where every enemy wants to grab you. If one clamps onto Goemon you have to jostle the joystick hard enough to break free, otherwise it’s game over. You’re never without a pipe, and you can also pick up whatever’s lying around to hurl at foes. Jumping on a head doesn’t just stun—it pushes the enemy down a level or off the screen entirely.

The controls are deliberately simple: push up to leap to a higher platform, down to drop, and wiggle the stick when an enemy is clinging to you to make it let go. Some later opponents fire projectiles, so you’ll need to dodge while timing your throws. Each stage ends either with a boss showdown or a glittering stack of gold bars that award points based on the level’s difficulty.

When it hit the arcades in ’86, Mr. Goemon became the kickoff for Konami’s Ganbare Goemon series, and Japanese trade magazines even listed it among the top table‑type machines of the month. That early success still shows why the game feels so addictive today.

Storyline

Mr. Goemon (often just called Goemon) draws its hero from the legendary 16th‑century Japanese outlaw Ishikawa Goemon.

In the arcade adventure, you play as Goemon, a crafty thief roaming Edo, whose mission is to hunt down and defeat the demons that have overrun the city.
