Summary
Mr. Goemon, the arcade debut of Konami’s Ganbare Goemon saga, plays as a side‑scrolling platformer set in Edo. You control the cheeky thief Goemon, armed with an always‑ready pipe and occasional throwables; a quick joystick jab is required to escape enemies that charge and grab you.
As the stages progress, foes acquire projectile attacks that must be dodged, while jumping on heads can shove opponents down a level or off the screen. Each zone finishes with either a boss showdown or a heap of gold bars whose point value varies by level. Though obscure outside Japan, the game earned a respectable #17 slot on Game Machine’s July 1 1986 table‑arcade ranking.
Storyline
Mr. Goemon (also known as Ganbare Goemon) drops you into Edo as the legendary thief Ishikawa Goemon. The arcade title casts you as Goemon, a rogue who roams the streets to hunt down and defeat the demons that have overrun the city. Inspired by the real‑life 16th‑century outlaw, the game blends historical myth with supernatural action. Each level pits you against hordes of yokai and boss monsters, forcing you to use Goemon’s sword and shuriken to clear the path. The ultimate goal is to purge Edo of the demonic threat and restore peace.
