Summary
MotoRace USA throws me onto a bike that dashes from Los Angeles to New York. Each leg splits into two mini‑stages: the first is a top‑down view where overtaking a car pushes the rank number upward; the second flips to a behind‑the‑rider perspective that scrolls past landmarks like Las Vegas casinos or a Manhattan skyline. The game alternates paved highways with two dirt‑road sections, and both types hide gas cans that refill fuel and wheel‑ie icons that add extra points. Jumping over log bridges or surfing puddles‑of‑water triggers temporary steering loss. Crashing costs fuel and can drop the rank, while finishing a city with a high position rewards bonus points and more gasoline. The arcade cabinet sported colorful art by Larry Day and Bruce Schafernak, and it even spawned SG‑1000 and F‑amicom ports.
Storyline
In MotoRace USA you take the helm of a motorcycle rider on a cross‑country dash from Los Angeles to New York City. Each city you pass awards a rank‑based bonus that pads your score and refuels your bike, keeping the momentum going. The journey feels like a road‑trip montage, with the West Coast’s neon giving way to endless highways and desert stretches. When you finally roll into New York, a flashing "Viva NY" sign greets you as the Statue of Liberty waves its torch. The moment is capped off by a rousing rendition of "The Star‑Spangled Banner," signaling the triumphant end of the coast‑to‑coast race.
