The roster includes Liu Kang, a Shaolin monk guided by Raiden; Sonya Blade, a Special Forces agent whose squad is held hostage; Kano, a Black Dragon mercenary after treasure; Johnny Cage, a fading Hollywood star seeking publicity; Sub‑Zero, a Lin Kuei assassin hired to kill Shang Tsung; and Scorpion, an undead ninja returned to avenge his murder by Sub‑Zero.

Each fighter battles through the island’s five stages, confronting Goro and Shang Tsung. Liu Kang ultimately defeats Goro and Shang Tsung, freeing the souls Tsung had stolen and securing Earthrealm’s safety. Scorpion finally kills Sub‑Zero, while Sonya rescues her team, Kano escapes, and Johnny returns to Hollywood to launch a new “Mortal Kombat” film franchise.
