Summary
Playing Mars Matrix (often just called Mars Matrix) feels like stepping into an arcade time capsule that still tricks you with modern depth. The whole experience boils down to one button – short taps fire your Normal Shot, holding it after a pause unleashes a Piercing Cannon, while a fully‑charged gauge lets you morph into the Mosquito, a shield‑wrapped fighter that can pull in enemy bullets and bounce them back as cubes. Every time you capture a cube your EXP rises, boosting your shot power up to eight levels and fueling a combo meter that keeps the action fast‑paced.
The game runs on Capcom’s CPS‑2 board but uses a horizontally‑aligned monitor, a quirky visual choice for a vertically scrolling shooter. You pilot one of two Mosquito ships – one favors speed with a laser weapon, the other trades some velocity for a broader blaster, letting you tailor the feel to each stage. Stages are concise, six in total, each crowned by a massive boss that forces you to manage timing, bullet patterns, and your ever‑growing charge gauge.
Between waves the experience system rewards aggressive play; the faster you grab cubes the longer the combo, the higher the score and the stronger your blasts. With just one button, strategic press‑timing replaces complex controls, offering a surprisingly deep shoot‑‘em‑up that still feels fresh on a modern console or a retro arcade cabinet.
Storyline
In 2100, food shortages drove millions to starvation and sparked civil wars worldwide. Centuries later, the world government launched a colonization effort on Mars, which gradually eased the crisis. While exploring a farm on the Red Planet, troops uncovered the Infinity chip, a relic that unlocked the technology of an ancient advanced civilization.
By 2309, the Martian colonies declared independence and sent a formal declaration to Earth. Massive armies now line the Martian surface, and a colossal armada stands ready to repel any Earthly assault.
In response, Earth dispatches a fleet of battleships followed by the elite ACID unit, piloting the new Mosquito fighter. Their objective in the arcade title Mars Matrix is to breach the Martian defenses, quell the rebel uprising, and eliminate the mysterious rebel leader.
