Summary

Magician Lord burst onto the Neo Geo scene as one of the system’s very first launch titles, even serving as a pack‑in game for the home AES console. Its bright, cartoon‑ish graphics and tight side‑scrolling action made it instantly recognizable among arcade‑goers.

You play as Elta, a wizard on a quest to reclaim stolen magical tomes, and the core gimmick is his ability to transform by grabbing colored orbs from treasure chests. Those orbs let you become a Dragon Warrior, Waterman, Poseidon, Shinobi, Samurai or Raijin, each with its own attack pattern, while untransformed Elta fires a fast‑moving energy projectile in four directions.

The game is notorious for its steep difficulty: later stages turn into maze‑like corridors, an invincible creature chases you if you linger, and hidden doors often hide minibosses. Mastering the timing of jumps, climbs and transformations is the only way to survive.

Magician Lord has resurfaced many times, from the 2007 Virtual Console releases in Europe, Australia and North America to PlayStation 3, PSP and the SNK Arcade Classics Vol. 1 collection, keeping its nostalgic charm alive for new generations of retro fans.

Storyline

Magician Lord (Arcade) follows the young magician Elta on a quest to save the world of Cadacis. The land was once threatened by the sorcerer Gal‑Agiese, who summoned monsters and tried to resurrect the demonic god Az Atorse. A previous hero, known as the Magician Lord, sealed Gal and Az inside eight magical tomes, but the seal weakened over time. When Gal escaped, he stole the tomes and resumed his plan, forcing Elta, the last descendant of the Magician Lord, to recover them. After battling Gal’s demonic henchmen and confronting him in his tower, Elta defeats the revived Az Atorse and reseals the god, restoring peace and reviving the legend of the Magician Lord.
