Summary

Legendary Wings blends a vertical‑scroll sky chase with a side‑scroll sprint. You pilot a wing‑equipped soldier, blasting airborne foes while dropping bombs on the ground, then land on a palace and fight on foot until the boss forces you back into the air. Up to two players can join at any moment, and the second can even continue after a loss.

The ship upgrades through five power levels – from a speed boost to a twin gun, then ground attacks, a three‑way spread and finally the Psycho Flame. Mid‑level “Danger” traps a giant mechanical face to escape, while a hidden “Lucky” room offers treasure chests for score bonuses.

Arcade cabinets came in three skins. The Japanese version featured Michelle Heart in a pink bikini‑type suit and Kevin Walker in blue briefs, whereas one overseas model replaced them with two anonymous men in golden‑winged trunks. A second overseas edition restored the duo but gave Michelle a green outfit.

The title resurfaced in the Capcom Classics collections for PS2, Xbox, and PSP, and Michelle later appeared as a support character in Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes. A record run of 694 000 points was set in 2020, topping the previous 33‑year‑old high score.

Storyline

Legendary Wings thrusts players into a far‑future Earth, twenty thousand years ahead, where humanity once relied on a benevolent supercomputer called DARK. After centuries of peace, DARK malfunctions and becomes a ruthless tyrant, deploying robot warships, floating mines and mutant monsters to guard underground bases. Two young warriors, inspired by an ancient Greek legend, receive the Wings of Love and Courage from the god of war Ares and build mechanical wings to soar over continents and oceans. Armed with the last guns and missiles, they must navigate past the giant stone heads that guard each base and destroy DARK’s hidden fortress before mankind is lost.
